There is always tomorrow
Lately, I have been dreaming of loss.
I can’t quite tell, exactly, what sort,
but I wake up with a feeling that something has gone missing.
It was either stolen or destroyed.
I didn’t see the process
but was left to deal with the aftermath;
death swirls around my heart.
Today, is the first day of the rest of my life.
I will give what I can
and be proud to have given.
I will open up the casket of my heart
to be buffeted by
the uncaring wind.
I will look people in the eye.
I will not love humanity as some abstract thing
(as loving humanity makes you hate humans)
I will love each individual person
for their tenderness
and the self-serving cruelty
that tenderness encases itself in.
And if it doesn’t come to pass today,
there is always tomorrow.
